Opening times and services
The brewery is open every day from 12pm to 2.30pm and from 7pm to 1am. Closing time is extended to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. There is a large smoking area inside, which is however closed on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.
Beer reigns here
The beer kingdom is in Como, at no. 3 Via Pasquale Paoli. A wonderful example of 19th century industrial archaeology, this large building houses the Birrificio di Como. Here beer is made using an entirely natural method, rejecting both filtration and pasteurisation. Skilful master brewers lovingly follow the whole production process, starting with the heating of the barley malt in copper-lined vats. The whole procedure takes place before the customers' eyes, since they may observe it through the glass walls separating the pub from the production area. The beer then flows from the tanks in the basement to the bar counter, ready to be pulled and served. It's hard to savour a fresher and most characteristic beer...
Besides beer... fun!
The beer is just one of the reasons for spending an evening at the Birrificio di Como, which is open seven days a week. Excellent cuisine at lunch and dinner, background music, the latest gastronomic ideas, large rooms for company events, and a garden enveloped in green nature. Spacious premises (Italy's biggest for a brewery - they hold up to 1,200 people) that are both warm and welcoming, plus careful attention to detail complete the range of attractions catering to people of all ages and all customer types, from families (with children's menus at special prices) to couples, the not-so-young and even groups of friends.
Inspiration in the kitchen too!
A team of professional chefs serve up creations never failing to surprise day in day out, while appealing presentation also plays its part. Dishes go from risottos served in copper saucepans, to the now famous "Piode" - circular stones used as a base to a variety of steaming meats. The list of starters, firstcourses, main courses, dessert (all home-made) and beer specialities is truly extensive and may be enjoyed late into the night. The restaurant always puts forward new and interesting dishes at lunchtime, satisfying the tastes of passing tourists and regular customers alike. Then in the evening there's always some different offer: Tuesdays are for the Beer Tube at half-price, Thursdaysare for gastronomic specialities such as Fondue Chinoise with Argentine beef or Alicanti paella, while Sundays are for the family, including a children's menu at only 5 euros. The forte remains quality. All products are carefully selected. The cold-platter meats and cheeses (such as Caslino goat's cheese, Semuda, Casoretta and Talessia) are local and bear the "Sapori di Terra, Sapori di Lago" quality consortium label.
The 5 beers
The Brewery makes five beers, which may also be purchased bottled: Roxanne (amber-coloured, double malt, 5.8%), Marilyn (blonde, 4.9%), All Black (stout, double malt, 6.4%), Malthus Weiss (Weizen, 4.9%) and Breva (blonde, double malt, high fermentation, 5.8%). All other details and services may be found on the internet site www.ilbirrificio.it, or by calling +39 031.505050
Sheltered from the greyness and the noise of the town, and surrounded by greenery, the garden behind the brewery is large enough to seat up to 200 people beneath its broad sunshades during the day or on a warm summer evening.
